Rail communication between Sylhet and Dhaka, as well as Chattogram, was suspended after an empty oil-tanker freight train derailed in Fenchuganj upazila at 29 November 9:40pm .
The derailment occurred in the Mallikpur area when a wagon of the returning 952 oil-tanker train went off the tracks, railway officials said.
Railway sources confirmed that the special fuel train had reached Sylhet earlier in the day, unloaded its oil, and was heading back towards Chattogram empty when the incident took place.
Confirming the development, Litton Chandra Dey, station master of Shayestaganj, said a relief train from the Kulaura shed has been called in and is expected to reach the site shortly to begin recovery operations.
With train services suspended on the route, the Kalni Express and other scheduled passenger trains have been unable to reach Sylhet on time.
Railway authorities have not yet said when normal operations will resume, as rescue efforts are still underway.
