Officer Removed after Killing of Eight Puppies in Pabna

The administration of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna has ordered Small Farmers Development Foundation officer Hasnur Rahman Noyon to vacate his government residence after eight newborn puppies were found drowned in a pond—an act that has triggered shock, grief and deep anger across the community. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the decision, calling the killing “an extreme act of cruelty,” and instructed him to leave the quarters within 24 hours, while the Department of Livestock Services took responsibility for treating the devastated mother dog. The incident came to light around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday when locals noticed the mother dog running in panic near the Upazila Auditorium, crying in a desperate, broken voice; following her calls, they found a white sack floating in the pond with her eight puppies dead inside. The puppies, born barely a week earlier in the officer’s yard, were reportedly thrown into the pond by the officer’s wife—information revealed by a child of the household. The officer later admitted the incident, saying his wife had asked him to “remove” the puppies for their children’s safety, adding that he “never imagined it would be done this way” and that he was “deeply sorry.” The brutality has sparked intense public outrage, with locals saying such acts from an educated family send a chilling signal: “If someone cannot understand the cry of a helpless creature, any form of cruelty is possible.” Residents welcomed the administration’s swift action but stressed the need for stronger monitoring and wider awareness to prevent similar violence. And yet, beyond all official steps, one image now hangs over Ishwardi like an unanswered question—the mother dog, wandering with wet, bewildered eyes, searching corners that no longer hold her babies. Her silent grief now echoes louder than any courtroom verdict, asking society a final, painful question: If we fail to protect the most helpless among us, what claim do we truly have to humanity?
