A Sub-Inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Md. Khorshed Alam, was injured in a knife attack while attempting to arrest a warrant-listed suspect in Sylhet. The incident occurred late Monday night at Sagar Dighir Par in the city when a team went to detain Rahim Uddin Raju, wanted in a cybercrime case. The injured officer is currently undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Early Tuesday morning, police arrested the accused, Raju (33), during a raid at a mess in the Mojumderi area under Airport Police Station. He is the son of Rafique Uddin from Paschim Konagram in Kanaighat upazila.
According to police, officers were conducting the operation in plain clothes when Raju sensed their presence and attempted to flee. As SI Khorshed Alam moved to detain him, Raju pulled out a knife from his pocket and stabbed him repeatedly before escaping.
Multiple teams of police and CID launched immediate operations across various parts of the city. CCTV footage was later analyzed, helping authorities trace Raju’s movements. The video shows that as CID members tried to stop him from getting onto his motorcycle, he suddenly wielded a knife, stabbed the officer, and fled on foot.
At a joint press briefing in the afternoon, CID and Sylhet Metropolitan Police detailed the arrest. CID DIG Dr. Md. Al Mamunur Ansari said Raju faces six cases—including theft, assault, and fraud involving digitally altered photos—under Kotwali and Shah Paran police stations.
“An attack on a law enforcement officer will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” he said, adding that strict action will be taken against those involved.
