At least seven people were killed and more than two dozen injured in separate road accidents in Gopalganj and Faridpur on Thursday, casting a shadow over Eid-ul-Azha travel across the country.
The deadliest crash occurred on the Dhaka–Khulna highway in Gopalganj’s Bedgram area when a Pirojpur-bound bus operated by Dola Paribahan collided head-on with a motorcycle travelling from the opposite direction.
Witnesses said the bus lost control after the collision and overturned on the highway, leaving four people dead on the spot, including the two motorcycle riders. A 12-year-old child later died while undergoing treatment at hospital, raising the death toll from the accident to five.
Police said at least 20 passengers were injured in the crash. The injured were rushed to Gopalganj General Hospital and Gopalganj Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Md Habibullah confirmed the incident and said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, two more people were killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in Faridpur district.
In one incident, 18-year-old motorcycle rider Rajon Sheikh was killed after his bike collided with a private car on the Dhaka–Barishal highway in Nagarkanda upazila. His friend, Ibrahim Fakir, sustained critical injuries and was admitted to hospital.
In another accident later in the evening, Alimuzzaman Matubbar, 55, died after two motorcycles collided head-on on the Dhaka–Khulna highway in Bhanga upazila. Three others were injured in the crash.
Police said legal procedures are underway, and the vehicles involved in the accidents have been seized.
