At least 30 people, including members of law enforcement agencies, were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Bhairab Railway Station in Kishoreganj on Thursday night, disrupting train services on several major routes for hours.
According to local sources, the violence stemmed from a dispute between youths of Panchabati and Jagannathpur areas that reportedly originated during a football match held around two weeks ago.
The situation escalated on Thursday evening after an alleged assault on a teenage boy, triggering tensions between the two groups. Later, supporters from both sides gathered at Bhairab Railway Station and became involved in a confrontation on platforms 1 and 2.
As the clash intensified, railway police, Bhairab Police Station personnel, members of the Railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and the army were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Several law enforcement personnel were injured while attempting to disperse the rival groups, police sources said.
The incident led to the suspension of train movements through Bhairab Junction, affecting services on the Dhaka-Chattogram, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Kishoreganj routes. A number of intercity and commuter trains remained stranded at nearby stations and outer signals, causing inconvenience to passengers.
Station Master Md Yusuf said train operations at Bhairab Junction were temporarily restricted to ensure passenger safety amid the unrest.
"Necessary measures were taken considering the security of passengers and railway property," he said.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Sayed of Bhairab Railway Police Station said the clash was linked to a previous dispute surrounding a football match.
"Legal action is being taken against those involved in the incident," he added.
Bhairab Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) AKM Mamunur Rashid said the administration acted to ensure public safety and restore order in the area.
Law enforcement agencies remained deployed in and around the station area at the time of filing this report, while efforts were underway to identify those responsible for the violence.
