Police have detained three people in connection with the recovery of the body of 13-year-old Ishayat Shahriar Apratim, who went missing in Cumilla about 21 hours before his body was found.
The detainees have been identified as Tuhin, Anas and Fahim. Police said they are aged between 18 and 20.
At the same time, law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and identify those involved.
At a press briefing on Saturday afternoon, Cumilla Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman said several police teams were working on the case.
Some important clues have been found during the investigation. One person is being questioned, and we are analysing information obtained from the questioning along with other evidence to identify those involved in the incident, he said.
The SP said police were giving priority to determining the reason and motive behind Apratim’s killing.
We are investigating whether the incident was solely related to an iPhone or whether there was something else behind it,  he said.
He said the details of the incident would be shared with Apratim’s parents and the authorities of Cumilla University after the actual perpetrators were identified and arrested.
He also sought cooperation from the media in the investigation.
Police said Apratim went missing at around 3pm on Friday after leaving his home. After having lunch with his family, he had told them that he was going outside to take photographs with his friends.
He left home carrying his mother’s iPhone but did not return.
After searching for him without success, Apratim’s father, KM Firoz Shahriar, filed a general diary with Sadar South Police Station.
Later, police, family members and teachers and students of Cumilla University conducted searches in different areas for him.
At around 1pm on Saturday, locals spotted Apratim’s body lying in a hilly area in the Sananda area near Cumilla University.
Police later went to the spot and recovered the body.
Investigators said they reviewed CCTV footage and found Apratim with a young man. With the help of local residents, the young man was later identified as Tuhin.
According to police, the footage showed Apratim going towards the Sananda hills with Tuhin.
Tuhin was detained at around 3pm on Saturday. After questioning him and analysing the information obtained from the questioning and CCTV footage, police detained Anas and Fahim later in the evening.
Police said the three detainees were being questioned and various pieces of information and evidence were being verified.
Mahmudul Hasan Rahat, former chairman of the Department of Journalism at Cumilla University and a member of the university’s proctorial body, said CCTV footage had been reviewed after Apratim went missing.
The footage showed him heading towards the Sananda hills with a young man.
Apratim was a Class VII student at Cumilla Border Guard Public School. His mother, Dr Nahida Begum, is an associate professor in the Bangla Department of Cumilla University.
He lived with his family in the Kotbari-Gandhamati area.
Police said determining the actual cause of Apratim’s death, the motive behind the killing and the identities of those involved are now the main focus of the investigation.
As of Saturday evening, no case had been filed in connection with the incident, police said.
