Egemuze yambozibe okile

A school of tilapia sing in my head
spawning thousands of thoughts. Sometimes

these shoals of fishes
dances to the music of my rumbling stomach.

Nothing seems natural
even my tear tastes sugary. The next thing,

I’m in my solitary
inhaling the steam of my poems
boiling anger.

Anytime my wife crows inside my head
my daughter watches and learns her song
trust, she’ll sing it in her own home.

Me talking to myself on the street.

A decades later my son understands
why I returned home late everyday
carrying with me a basket of butterflies.

Life stares at me face to face
so I had no choice but to face my fears.
