Science Education and our prevailing hurdles

Bangladesh is a country where we simultaneously see our glorious achievement as well as our paucity that can not let us reach to the intended goals. Despite various feats, we, not grossly, fail to embed a standard and time -befitting education system which will cast a spell and come true the dream of making the country a real Sonar Bangla. But, it can shockingly be said that the problem which stands in the way of attaining our most cherished goal is undiscerned. Still, our all-up education system is in validating stage let alone science education. Rapid syllabus or curriculum change makes education system wavering and the students, the core agents of this system, can not cope with this changing and seem everything topsy and turvy in their life,resulting they lose hope to pursue for science education. A country like ours, should have taken this matter seriously wherein we can ensure our students a world -wide recognized education. Unfortunately we are in budding stage and such sluggishness pours cold water on the tender minds of our students. As a nation, we were supposed to settle a healthy education system for our offspring as we are going to celebrate the golden Jubilee of independence without much delay. In fact, no progress will linger much unless we can outgrow the horns of a dilemma that is existing in our education system.

“Youths are the only resource and can bring a radical change in the economy of our country, ” the premier of our country once stated in a meeting. She also said, “Only an educated nation can transform our country into a real middle -income country. “
What does science education mean? Education is a process which disperses ignorance and enkindles the light of knowledge and of course, imparts us to make ourselves conscious to the contemporary world. There may have a question why students should study science or why we should patronize our science students. According to the definition of science education, it is the field concerned with sharing science content and process with individuals not traditionally considered part of the scientific community. Actually science is a universal subject that spans the branch of knowledge, that examines the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

In our country, science education is not duly nurtured. Students are usually imparted theoretical and monotonous lessons that can not draw the attention of the students and fail to make them eager to study. Syllabus which is being taught in secondary and higher secondary level is unrealistically large and students have to face a very bizarre situation to complete it. In accordance with different statistics, only handful students are efficient enough to complete their course successfully.On the other hand, majority of the students neither can make sure a good result nor can utilize their hard -earned result. In fact, science education ,without having worthy engagement of practical classes,will come to nothing and will not be able to represent facts and figures that is crying need for us. If this education is offered through traditional way which is mainly lecture and cramming method or outmoded ways, students will certainly fail to prove themselves not only in national level but also in international level. Because of this worn-out method, students are learning and jotting down unknowingly and the result they make is utterly otiose.
In science education, students are supposed to be given applied knowledge, they should be sent to different practically viable spots from where they can learn something new and can inspire themselves to gather new knowledge.
In comparison with other faculties,science curriculum that has been designed for the students is a bit difficult. That’s why, students with mediocre merits hardly enroll themselves
to study science. In secondary level, the enrollment rate of science students is not more than thirty five percent and it is declining in higher secondary level. Who will be doctors, engineers and scientists?Who will invent new things for the welfare of mankind unless students are imparted science education? Consequently, no progress will take place substantially in our country and we will lag behind.

Even the quality of science education in our urban areas is not at all up to the mark let alone rural areas.As students alone can not understand various contents that they are to study in their classes.As a result, they have to take some extra lessons from private tutors.But many students can not afford the fees of coaching. The steps that have been taken to upgrade the existing state of science education are not at all helpful for the less Crack-a-jack students who are eager enough to study science but their caliber is not as high as the meritorious students.
Students who are studying in different schools were asked some questions about the cruxes that they generally face during their school days. They answered that they can not solve their problems at their own sweet will. Moreover, the number of teachers, especially in rural areas who teach science subjects is slimmer than usual.Teachers are not, to the turn of hair, trained to keep an eye on changing curriculum that impedes them to conduct their classes successfully.Students are not shown anything practically. So the classes can not draw the attention of the students.
We have to bear in mind that only 5—10percent students are innate genius and can be taught in any circumstances. However, remaining students are to face a lot of hurdles to make themselves graduate.Generally students are told to study science to be doctors or engineers. But they are not encouraged by saying the benefits of science. If antibiotics or vaccines were not invented, millions of people would die everyday. Other inventions also paved the way for human civilization. We all have to realize this crucial fact and accordingly take some steps so that we can ensure better education for all.
In fine, to meet up the demand of the twentieth -century and ensure the quality of education, we are to take science education into our consideration seriously so as to our target, to be a developed country can utterly be fulfilled. We should not compromise with such volatile education system in our palmy days and should not make our students slippery customer.Time has really come to hit upon the plan for making our country a prosperous one. The bottom line is that the concerned authority should assume responsibility under the aegis of the state and do everything without fail. Otherwise, our students will fail to acclimatize to other part of the world.
