One of the heroes of our time,
Soumitra Dev was born on 27 July 1970 in Moulvibazar. His grandfather Promod Chandra Dev was a renowned lawyer and
politician. His father Sushital Dev was a government employee. Mother Maya Dev was a housewife. He is the only brother of four sisters. His sisters are
Sharbari , Sharmila, Sharmistha and Sutapa and they are all highly educated.
Soumitra Dev did his SSC from Moulvibazar Government High School, HSC from Moulvibazar Government College and
completed his graduation under National University of Bangladesh. He did his Post Graduate diploma in Journalism from Bangladesh Press Institute. Besides,he took a graduate training on planning, administration and management from Agriculture University.
Soumitra Dev, one of the organizers of the student mass movement of the nineties at the district level, contested for the post of mayor in Moulvibazar municipality in 2015.
He has taken training in the fourth batch of the Young Writers Project of Bangla Academy. From there, his book of poems – ‘Shamayita’s Badi ‘has been published. He has worked in various research activities of Bangladesh Press Institute, Asiatic Society and Bangla Academy. He is one of the authors of a book on folk culture of Bangladesh published by Bangla Academy.
Soumitra Dev, author of 41 published books, has attended various international literary conferences in many countries of the world. In 2005, he participated in the 10th North American Bengali Literature and Culture Conference. Apart from this, he has brightened the image of the country by participating in several other events in China, Malaysia, Nepal and India.
Although he traveled in almost all branches of literature, he has made a special contribution in folk literature. The first national Hasan festival was held in Dhaka in 2009 by his initiative. His most important book in folk literature is ‘The mystic poet Hasan Raja and His life and philosophy’.
His other important books are Digital Bangladesh and Alternative Media, Ajabithi, Ban Parjotak , Nil Krishnacura, Purbo Theke Poshcime , Jolay Sthalay Anthorikkay, Himalayan Konnar Hashi, Tumul Tusher Bristol,Agun Pipasa, Pathorer Choke etc.
Soumitra Dev has chosen journalism and writing as his profession. He started working for the national daily Prothom Alo. After that he worked for five consecutive years as an assistant editor in the tabloid daily Manabzamin. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the online media RedTimes.com.bd.
Acting and recitation is his passion .The first full-length film of Soumitra Dev was Nekabbar Er Mahaprayan that won the National Film Award. Most recently, he played a special role in ‘Dakghar’ film by Rabindranath Tagore and which was funded by the Shilpakala Academy. He has received Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award 2018 for his contribution in film.
He received the Bangladesh Writers Foundation Medal 2005 for his poetry.
