Why are we so crazy about World Cup football? A fan spends lakhs to paint his six-storied house with the Brazilian flag. The rival team’s supporter paints his three-storied house with the Argentine flag. A farmer sells his agricultural land to make the largest (3.5 KM) German flag. People sacrifice goats/ cows for the victory of their favorite teams. Some one died due to cardiac arrest when his team had lost the match. A supporter does not know where Cameroon is located and yet cheers up the team with so much of enthusiasm. The jerseys of all major teams are available all over the country.
I think the Television played a major role in creating this state of frenzy. Prior to 1974, our TV did not broadcast World Cup matches but once they started live broadcasting, people just went crazy. In 201O, I remember the whole Gulshan 2 circle used to turn in to a stadium whenever a World Cup match was shown on a giant screen at night. Crime rates go down as people watch these matches all night. It seems even the South Americans or Africans are not as crazy about football as we are. When Bangladesh someday plays in the World Cup, what will we do?
