According to a report published by the Hindustan Times on Sunday (April 19), this move marks a significant strategic shift, as New Delhi opts for a political figure to lead its mission in Dhaka after a long hiatus. Trivedi is set to succeed the incumbent High Commissioner, Prannoy Verma, who is expected to take on a new assignment as the Indian envoy to the European Union (EU) in Brussels.

Key Highlights of the Transition:

  • A Strategic Choice: Analysts view the selection of a seasoned politician like Trivedi as a “special message” to the diplomatic circles, highlighting the depth of the bilateral relationship between the two neighbors.
  • Formal Procedures: While the decision has been reached in principle, the formal appointment will proceed following the standard diplomatic protocol of seeking “Agreemo” (official approval) from the government in Dhaka.
  • The Outgoing Envoy: Prannoy Verma, the current High Commissioner, will be transitioning to a high-profile role in Brussels, representing India’s interests in the EU.

About Dinesh Trivedi:

Dinesh Trivedi is a prominent figure in Indian politics with extensive administrative experience. He previously served as the Union Minister for Railways and held the portfolio of Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. Formerly a key member of the Trinamool Congress, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2021.
