Three youths were detained today for traveling on the roof of the Dhaka-bound Intercity Parabat Express at Sreemangal Railway Station.
According to railway sources, the Sylhet-bound Parabat Express, running behind schedule, arrived at Sreemangal station at 1:05 PM. During its stopover, Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) Md. Arif spotted several youths sitting on the train’s roof.
With the assistance of railway security guard Md. Alamin and railway police personnel Md. Sohag, an operation was launched immediately. While two managed to flee the scene, security personnel successfully cornered and detained three others.
The detainees were taken to the TTE office at Sreemangal station, where they were interrogated for about 30 minutes. They were later released after paying a nominal fine and receiving a strict warning against putting their lives at risk in the future.
During questioning, the youths claimed to hail from Narsingdi, Brahmanbaria, and Shayestaganj. However, their identities could not be independently verified.
Railway officials emphasized that traveling on a train roof is not only strictly prohibited by law but also exceptionally hazardous.
”Roof-riding poses fatal accident risks and often serves as a breeding ground for luggage snatching and theft. To ensure passenger safety, we are maintaining strict vigilance and conducting regular drives,” a railway official stated.
When contacted, Md. Jahangir Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreemangal Railway Police Station, said, “I am not aware of the incident.”
Nevertheless, railway authorities reiterated that operations against roof-riding and ticketless traveling will continue unabated to ensure the safety of commuters.
