A 12-year-old girl who went missing in Chandpur five days ago was found dead in the Dakatiya River on Sunday morning, prompting her family and local residents to demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The victim, Farzana Akter Fatema, had gone out near her home on the afternoon of 19 November and never returned. After days of frantic searching, locals spotted a body floating in the chairman ghat–Dorjibari area of the river and alerted the police. Family members later identified it as Farzana.

ASM Iqbal Hossain, officer-in-charge of the Chandpur Naval Police Station, said they received an allegation that a trawler operator, Monir Hossain, had pushed the girl into the river. He has since been arrested.
“The investigation is being carried out with utmost importance. We are working to uncover the actual sequence of events,” the OC said, adding that the body has been sent for autopsy to determine the cause of death.

However, locals have expressed doubt over the initial explanation, saying it does not fully clarify what happened during the girl’s disappearance.
“From the moment she went missing to the recovery of the body—there are questions at every step. The entire incident must be investigated thoroughly,” said one resident.

The family echoed the same concern, stating they still do not know how Farzana died.
“We have found our daughter’s body, but we still don’t know the truth behind her death. Arresting one person is not enough—every detail of the incident must be revealed,” a family member said, urging authorities for a speedy and impartial investigation.

Meanwhile, grief and tension have spread across the area following the incident.
“Her death must not remain a mystery. The truth must come out so the family gets justice,” said local residents.

Upon receiving news of the recovery, Nadia Nur, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance), visited the scene and assured that the matter is being closely monitored.
