At least 12 people were killed and more than 29 others injured in a mass shooting at Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular tourist destinations, on Sunday evening local time.

According to Reuters, emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after gunfire erupted in the crowded beach area. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with several reported to be in critical condition.

New South Wales Police said two suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the attack. Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that at least two gunmen were involved, and one of them was shot dead at the scene.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, calling it “deeply tragic and shocking.” He said emergency responders were working tirelessly to save lives and assured the public that the situation was now under control.

Local resident Harry Wilson told The Sydney Morning Herald that he saw several people lying on the ground covered in blood, describing the scene as “terrifying.”

Bondi Beach is typically packed with both locals and international tourists. Authorities say this is being regarded as one of the most serious violent incidents in Sydney in more than a decade, recalling the 2014 Lindt Café siege that left two hostages and the gunman dead after a prolonged standoff.
