A cyclist was killed after a jeep fell from the Shahid Wasim Akram Elevated Expressway in Chattogram. The accident occurred today in the late afternoon near the Bandar Thana area on Nimtala–Bishwa Road.
The deceased has been identified as Md. Shafiq (55). He was a resident of Gosaildanga and the son of Shahed. Shafiq worked as an outsourced employee at the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA).
According to police, a Harrier-model jeep carrying three men and one woman was travelling from Patenga towards Lalkhan Bazar. The vehicle, moving at high speed, lost control at the Nimtala point and collided with the expressway barrier before falling below.
Bandar Thana Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman Rana said, “At the moment the jeep fell, Shafiq was cycling along the road beneath. He was crushed under the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was declared dead by the doctors on arrival.”
The jeep’s four passengers were seriously injured and rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Port) Mahmudul Hasan said the jeep was badly damaged upon impact and has been seized by police. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident and the condition of the driver.
Local residents and fire service personnel arrived promptly at the scene to assist in the rescue operation.
