Two people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in the Mouchak area of Bahubal upazila on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred around 7:00am.
The deceased were identified as Ashraful Muktakim (35), the driver of the Sylhet-bound pickup, and Liton Gazi (55), a vegetable trader from Kishoreganj.
According to witnesses, the pickup loaded with vegetables was heading towards Sylhet when it crashed into an oncoming sand-laden truck. The impact crushed the front of the pickup, killing driver Ashraful on the spot. Critically injured Liton was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he later died while undergoing treatment.
Members of the Shaistaganj Highway Police and Fire Service rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations. The incident was confirmed by Md Abu Taher Dewan, officer-in-charge of Shaistaganj Highway Police, and Aminul Islam, OC of Bahubal Police Station.
The bodies have been kept at the police station. After completion of legal procedures, they will be handed over to the families.
Vehicular movement on the highway returned to normal after the wrecked truck and pickup were removed from the road.
