Police have arrested the prime suspect in the killing of a minor girl, Ira, who was found with her throat slit in a remote area of Sitakunda Eco Park in Chattogram.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Industrial Area and Detective Branch) Mohammad Russell confirmed the development to the media on Tuesday (March 3). The arrested suspect, Babu Sheikh, is currently being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to police and hospital sources, the child was rescued on Sunday (March 1) from a secluded hilly stretch inside the Botanical Garden and Eco Park area under Sitakunda municipality. She was critically injured and immediately taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Hospital authorities said she was first admitted to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department. As her airway had sustained severe damage, doctors carried out an emergency surgery later that night. Although her condition showed slight improvement after the operation, it worsened the following day.
She was subsequently placed under close observation and later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as her condition turned critical. The child died early Tuesday while undergoing treatment. Hospital sources said she was unable to make any statement before her death.
Officer-in-Charge of Sitakunda Police Station, Mohinul Islam, said the incident is being investigated with utmost importance. “We are conducting a thorough probe. Those responsible will be brought to justice as quickly as possible,” he said.
Police added that legal proceedings are underway and efforts are continuing to determine the motive behind the killing.
