Swapan Kumar singh:
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has underscored the importance of expanding rail connectivity as part of a broader development strategy for Sylhet, describing it as a sustainable solution to mounting transport challenges.

Addressing a civic reception at the city corporation premises on Saturday, he said strengthening rail infrastructure is essential to reduce pressure on highways and ensure efficient, long-term connectivity between Sylhet and the capital.

Highlighting the limitations of road expansion, the prime minister noted that widening highways often leads to a rise in vehicle numbers, worsening traffic congestion and contributing to the loss of agricultural land. “The more roads we expand, the more vehicles will use them, increasing traffic congestion,” he said.

To tackle the issue, the government has taken a plan to upgrade the Dhaka–Sylhet railway line into a double-track system. The initiative is expected to improve travel time, increase train frequency, and enhance both passenger and freight capacity on the route.

He expressed optimism that a stronger rail network would ease travel difficulties and support economic growth across the greater Sylhet region, adding that a balanced transport system with rail at its core remains a key priority of the government’s long-term vision.
