A promising medical career came to an abrupt end as Dr Anchal Roy, a 30-year-old physician, died of dengue at a hospital in Dhaka on Sunday (September 27).
An assistant registrar at Mugda Medical College Hospital, Anchal had recently passed the FCPS mid-term examination in Internal Medicine and cleared Part 1 of the UK-based MRCP examination.
She died at Square Hospital at around 8:20am on Sunday, her husband Biplob Chandra Das said.
Anchal had been receiving treatment at home for four days after being diagnosed with dengue. On the fifth day, her platelet count dropped sharply and her condition deteriorated, Biplob said.
She was initially admitted to the hospital’s High Dependency Unit (HDU). As her condition worsened, she was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Anchal was posted to the Neurology Department of Mugda Medical College Hospital. She had recently been attached to the hospital’s Respiratory Medicine Department, where she was also involved in treating dengue patients.
“We were very happy after Anchal passed the FCPS mid-term and MRCP Part 1 examinations. I was very proud of her,” Biplob said.
Biplob, who works at the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT), met Anchal while they were studying at Noakhali Medical College. They were in a relationship for three years before getting married around 17 months ago.
Anchal grew up in Dhaka, while her ancestral home was in Brahmanbaria. She joined government service after passing the 42nd Bangladesh Civil Service examination.
Meanwhile, dengue deaths have increased significantly in September amid the ongoing outbreak.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services, 225 people have died of dengue across Bangladesh this year as of 8am on Sunday. Of them, 128 deaths were recorded in September alone.
