Rajshahi, 11 December – A two-year-old boy, Sajid, who fell into a deep abandoned tube well shaft in Tanore, was rescued after 32 hours of continuous efforts but could not be saved.
District Commissioner Afia Akhtar confirmed the incident on Thursday night around 10:15 pm. The child was taken to Tanore Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead after examination.
Dr. Barnabas Hasdak, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said Sajid was declared dead at 9:40 pm. Fire service personnel had rescued him from the nearly 40-feet-deep shaft at 9:05 pm.
According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in a field of Koel Hat Purba Para village under Panchandar Union. A soil-laden trolley suddenly fell into the shaft while Sajid’s mother, Runa Khatun, was accompanying him. While walking, the boy suddenly shouted “Ma” and fell into the pit. Moments later, Runa Khatun heard her son calling from below.
Fire service and local residents immediately launched a rescue operation, safely retrieving the child and taking him to Tanore Upazila Health Complex. Despite nearly a day and a half of intensive rescue efforts, Sajid could not be saved.
