Ekushey Padak-winning rhymester, cartoonist and writer Sukumar Barua passed away today at a hospital in Chattogram. He was around 88 years old.
Family sources said Barua breathed his last in the early hours of Friday while undergoing treatment for age-related complications. He had been ill for some time and was admitted to the hospital a few days ago.
Alongside his literary pursuits, Sukumar Barua served for many years as a fourth-class employee at the University of Dhaka. Despite his modest professional position, he earned wide recognition for his creative brilliance, particularly in rhymes and cartoons that reflected simplicity, satire and social awareness.
Barua made significant contributions to Bangla children’s literature and rhyme. His works were regularly published in various national newspapers and magazines, earning him admiration from readers across generations.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Bangla literature, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
Writers, cultural activists and literary organisations have expressed deep sorrow at his death, describing it as an irreparable loss to Bangla literature.
Details of his janaza and burial will be announced later, according to family members.
