For the first time, the Election Commission (EC) will issue accreditation cards for journalists and election observers online for coverage and monitoring of the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the referendum. The information was confirmed today by EC Director of Public Relations Md Ruhul Amin Mallik.
He said that in previous elections, media personnel and observers had to apply in person at the EC Secretariat or at the returning officer’s office. After approval, the cards and vehicle stickers were distributed physically — a process that was both time-consuming and costly.
“This time we are moving away from the manual system and shifting to online submissions,” he added.
According to EC officials, a dedicated website has been developed for this purpose. Applicants will have to submit the required information and upload relevant documents through the portal.
Once the application is approved, local journalists will be able to download their accreditation cards from home, while domestic observers will be able to download both their cards and vehicle stickers.
Freelance journalists must have valid PID cards to apply. Applicants will also be required to submit a letterhead application, office ID, NID card and other necessary documents.
The 13th national election is scheduled to be held on 12 February. The online accreditation system is currently at the trial stage and may be fully operational by next week, Ruhul Amin Mallik said.
