At least 25 people were killed and 35 others injured in road accidents across Sylhet Division in January this year, according to a report released by Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA).
The report, sent to the media on Sunday (February 8), stated that a total of 25 road accidents occurred across the division during the month. Among the districts, Sylhet and Habiganj recorded the highest number of fatalities, while Moulvibazar experienced comparatively fewer accidents.
According to the district-wise breakdown, six accidents in Sylhet district claimed eight lives and left 10 people injured. In Sunamganj, seven accidents resulted in six deaths and 12 injuries. Moulvibazar reported four accidents, killing three people and injuring four others. Meanwhile, Habiganj district recorded eight road accidents in which eight people were killed and nine injured.
NISCHA Central Committee Assistant Organising Secretary and Member Secretary of its Sylhet Divisional Committee, Jahirul Islam Mishu, said the report was prepared based on information collected from five local daily newspapers, various online news portals, two national dailies, and data gathered by different NISCHA units in Sylhet.
The report further revealed that among those killed in January, five were motorcycle riders or passengers, seven were drivers or passengers of CNG-run auto-rickshaws and tomtoms, eight were drivers of different vehicles, and eight were pedestrians.
In terms of accident types, one person was killed in two incidents involving vehicles overturning due to loss of control, while seven people died in 10 head-on collision accidents.
Age and gender-based data showed that of the 25 fatalities, 18 were men, three were women and four were children.
The report also noted that the situation had been equally alarming in the previous month. In December, Sylhet Division witnessed 33 road accidents that claimed 37 lives and left 61 people injured.
