Three people, including a CNG autorickshaw driver, were killed in a head-on collision between a pickup van and a CNG-run three-wheeler in Moulvibazar early (20 February) Friday.
The accident occurred around 1:30am on the Moulvibazar–Srimangal regional highway in Shahpur area under Giasnagar union of Sadar upazila, police and local sources said. At least two other passengers were injured in the crash and are undergoing treatment.
The deceased were identified as CNG driver Ali Nur (also known as Alinur), a resident of Kalenga village under Munshibazar union in Kamalganj upazila, and passengers Rubel Mia and Rehan Mia, both from Dorga Mohalla area of Moulvibazar town.
According to witnesses, the CNG autorickshaw was heading towards Srimangal from Moulvibazar when it collided head-on with a speeding pickup van coming from the opposite direction. The impact left the three-wheeler severely mangled, killing the driver and one passenger on the spot.
Another critically injured passenger, Rubel Mia, was rescued by members of the Fire Service and rushed to the 250-bed Moulvibazar General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saiful Islam of Moulvibazar Model Police Station confirmed the fatalities, saying police reached the scene shortly after the crash and recovered the bodies with assistance from the Fire Service. The bodies have been sent to the morgue of Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
The vehicles involved have been seized and legal steps are underway, the OC added.
Locals alleged that reckless driving and overspeeding are common on the busy stretch of highway and urged authorities to strengthen traffic enforcement to prevent further tragedies.
