A police officer was killed after being run over by a truck on the Sylhet–Tamabil highway in Jaintiapur upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Atikur Rahman, was posted at Jaintiapur Model Police Station. The accident occurred around 3:00pm in the Darbast area while he was on duty.
According to Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Molla of the police station, a Tamabil-bound truck hit the officer during duty hours, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 5:30pm while undergoing treatment.
Police have seized the truck involved and detained its driver. Legal proceedings are currently underway, the OC added.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the local police community.
