A Manipuri drama titled Tarpan was staged at an open-air venue in the Chotodhamai Manipuri locality of Juri upazila in Moulvibazar on Friday night (February 27).
The cultural programme began at 8:00pm with a traditional Manipuri dance performance, followed by the staging of the drama. The event continued until late at night, attracting members of the local Manipuri community and cultural enthusiasts.
Featuring around 20 male and female performers, Tarpan brought to light various social inconsistencies and entrenched superstitions. The drama placed particular emphasis on women’s rights, gender discrimination, and the adverse effects of religious blind faith. Through compelling dialogue and expressive performances, the artistes illustrated how unjust practices and irrational beliefs impede social progress, while awareness and human values can foster meaningful change.
The core message of the production stressed that no society can achieve true advancement without ensuring dignity and equal rights for women. It also called for discarding baseless customs and promoting a rational, justice-based social framework.
The drama was written and directed by poet, teacher and playwright Ranjit Kumar Singh.
