Metropolitan University, one of Bangladesh’s prominent private higher education institutions, has stepped into its 24th year, completing over two decades of academic excellence, institutional expansion, and steady progress. The university marked its 23rd anniversary on Sunday (May 3, 2026), celebrating a journey widely described as one of sustained development in higher education in the Sylhet region.
Founded by educationist Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury with the vision of expanding access to higher education in Sylhet, the institution formally began its academic journey on May 3, 2003, following approval from the Ministry of Education. Over the years, it has grown under the leadership of its founding figures, including the Board of Trustees’ Vice Chairman Tanwir MO Rahman Chowdhury, earning recognition as a steadily developing academic institution.
According to the university’s Public Relations Office, the institution currently operates from a permanent campus located in Bateshwar on the outskirts of Sylhet city. The campus is equipped with modern academic infrastructure, laboratories, a library, transport facilities, and co-curricular arrangements. At present, the university runs eight academic departments under four faculties and has already held three convocation ceremonies.
Officials noted that graduates from the institution have secured positions in reputed global organisations, including companies such as Google, Amazon, and Agoda. In October 2024, the university achieved another milestone by receiving its ‘Permanent Certificate’, becoming the first private university in the greater Sylhet region to attain this recognition.
On the occasion of the anniversary, Chairman Emeritus Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Tanwir MO Rahman Chowdhury issued separate messages extending greetings to students, faculty members, parents, staff, and well-wishers.
Dr. Chowdhury described the past 23 years as a journey of “knowledge, research, and ethical development,” adding that the university was founded with the goal of making higher education more accessible in Sylhet while maintaining global standards in teaching and learning.
Board Chairman Tanwir MO Rahman Chowdhury highlighted the institution’s focus on quality education and values-based learning. He noted that more than 10,000 graduates from the university are now working in various sectors both at home and abroad, contributing to national pride through their professional achievements.
He further added that the university remains committed to advancing its academic standards, expanding opportunities, and nurturing skilled graduates with modern outlooks and strong ethical foundations.
