Two people were killed and two others injured in a fatal road accident involving a drum truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Wednesday, 10 June, morning.
The accident occurred around 10:00am near the (Bhejura Bridge) Andiura Area , bringing traffic movement on the busy highway to a standstill for nearly two hours and causing long queues on both sides of the road.
According to police and local sources, a speeding drum truck coming from a feeder road entered the highway and collided head-on with a passenger-laden CNG auto-rickshaw. The impact severely damaged the three-wheeler.
The driver of the CNG, Akkas Mia (40), a resident of Bengadoba village under Noapara union in Madhabpur, died on the spot.
Another victim, Monowara Begum (70), wife of noted agricultural scientist Dr Kamrul Hasan and a resident of Uttar Noapara village, later died while undergoing treatment at Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex.
Two other passengers sustained critical injuries and were later shifted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment. Their identities could not be confirmed immediately.
Confirming the incident, Madhabpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sohel Rana said police and highway officers rushed to the scene, carried out rescue operations, and recovered the bodies. The accident vehicles were later seized.
Legal procedures in connection with the incident are underway, he added.
