Rupojit Kar Raju (36), an assistant teacher at Mirpur Sunshine Model High School, was killed after being hit by a vegetable-laden truck in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj. The accident occurred around 7:00am today, Sunday (7 December), on the Dhaka–Sylhet regional highway in the Bendarpool area of New Bazar. Raju was the son of Nipes Kar from Baniagaon village.
According to locals, Raju had returned home after dropping his wife at Mirpur Bazar to board a bus bound for Kulaura. A short while later, he went for a walk with two others from the area. When they reached the Bendarpool area, a speeding truck heading towards Sreemangal ran over them and fled the scene immediately. Raju and Furanjan Deb sustained critical injuries. They were taken to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Raju dead. Furanjan Deb was later shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
News of the teacher’s death cast a shadow of grief over the area. Mirpur Sunshine Model High School’s governing body chairman, M. Shamsuddin, expressed deep sorrow and announced the suspension of all scheduled annual examinations for the day, along with a one-day closure of the institution.
Bahubal Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Aminul Islam said, “Police have intensified efforts to identify the truck and its driver. An operation is underway to uncover the full circumstances of the accident and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
