A pickup van carrying cattle was severely damaged after being hit by the intercity Jayantika Express in Brahmanbariaâs Bijoynagar upazila on Thursday afternoon, leaving the driver injured and one cow dead.
The accident occurred around 2:45pm near Mukundapur Railway Station at a level crossing in the area.
According to police and local sources, the pickup became stuck on the railway track while attempting to cross. At that moment, the Dhaka-to-Sylhet bound Jayantika Express arrived at the spot and slammed into the vehicle.
The collision left the pickup badly mangled.
Officer-in-Charge of Akhaura Railway Police Station, SM Shafiqul Islam, said the injured driver, identified as Shanto Mia, 23, was rescued and taken to Bijoynagar Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
He added that one of the cattle being transported in the pickup died on the spot.
Train movement on the route remained disrupted for a short time following the accident. Rail communication returned to normal nearly 20 minutes later after the damaged vehicle was removed from the track.
