The much-anticipated GNC School Cricket Tournament 2026, aimed at developing cricket at the grassroots level and nurturing future talent in the Sylhet region, was officially inaugurated at the historic MC College Ground on Wednesday (January 14).
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Director Rahat Shams was present as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony. Sylhet District First Division Cricket League Vice President Sadat Hossain was present as the special guest.
Speaking as the chief guest, BCB Director Rahat Shams said, “There is no alternative to school-level cricket to produce future national team players. Real talent will emerge if regular and structured tournaments are organized at this level.” He appreciated the initiative to organize such a school cricket tournament in Sylhet and expressed hope that the GNC School Cricket Tournament 2026 will play an important role in further strengthening the foundation of cricket in Bangladesh.
GNC founding member Syed Rafi also spoke at the ceremony. He said, GNC (Grey Nichols Cricketers) is known as a pioneer cricket club of the 1980s, which has been working for the development of cricket in Sylhet for a long time. He further said that the main objective of GNC School Cricket Tournament 2026 is to spread cricket education among school students, help develop physical fitness and leadership qualities and create a sustainable platform for regional and national cricket development. He also mentioned that the presence of the founding members is providing additional encouragement and inspiration to the young cricketers.
Former women player Aleya Ferdousi Tuli said, “We are continuously working in every district to produce female cricketers. In the future, efforts will continue to be made to find talented girls from all districts and bring them to the national level.”
16 schools of Sylhet metropolis are participating in this tournament. The participating young cricketers are getting the opportunity to showcase their skills, discipline and sportsmanship in a competitive environment.
GNC founding members Zahirul Haque Hiroo, Ali Wasiquzzaman Oni, Abdul Wadud Sweet and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Media Coordinator Dewan Tayef Hossain Chowdhury were also present at the inaugural ceremony. Coaches, organizers, teachers and parents were also present to encourage the players.
