Metropolitan University in Sylhet has launched a four-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) programme in Data Science, marking the first full-fledged undergraduate programme in the discipline in the Sylhet region. University officials said admission for the Spring Term is currently underway.
Designed to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving digital world, the curriculum includes key areas such as data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, programming and statistics. The programme will be delivered by experienced faculty members and supported by modern computer laboratories, hands-on training, a research-oriented learning environment, internship opportunities and dedicated career support, the authorities added.
According to the university, data science has become one of the most sought-after fields globally as data-driven decision-making is increasingly essential across sectors such as banking, fintech, e-commerce, healthcare, telecommunications, research and information technology. Graduates of the programme will be equipped to pursue careers as data scientists, data analysts, machine learning engineers, AI and ML researchers and data engineers, both at home and abroad.
Applicants must have passed SSC and HSC or equivalent examinations from the science stream to be eligible for admission. The university is offering merit-based scholarships of up to 50 percent, while students who achieved GPA-5 (Golden) in HSC will be eligible for special tuition fee waivers, university officials said.
