Four people were killed and several others injured in separate road and rail accidents in Noakhali, Gazipur and Satkhira, police said, adding that legal proceedings were underway in connection with the incidents.
In Noakhali, two youths were killed in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a pickup van on the Maijdee–Choumuhani road in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
The accident occurred around 1:15am in front of the Upazila Land Office. The deceased were identified as Abhi Debnath, 23, and Hridoy Chandra Shil, 22, both residents of Binodpur union. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Noakhali General Hospital, where Abhi was declared dead. Hridoy and the pickup van driver were later referred to Dhaka, but Hridoy succumbed to his injuries yesterday morning.
Police said the motorcyclists were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Both the motorcycle and the pickup van have been seized, and a case is being prepared.
In Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila, a schoolteacher was killed after being hit by a train on the Dhaka–Narsingdi rail line at Nolchhata area yesterday morning. The victim, Kamal Christopher Rozario, 65, was an English teacher at Panjora Girls’ High School. Railway police said he was walking along the rail track during his regular morning walk when he was struck by the train and died on the spot. Necessary legal steps are being taken in this regard.
Meanwhile, in Satkhira’s Kalaroa upazila, a battery-run van driver was killed after being hit by a bus in the Kazirhat area around 9:30am yesterday. The deceased was identified as Rahatul Islam Opu, 36, a resident of Jhikargacha upazila in Jashore. Quoting witnesses, police said a bus hit the van from behind in a market area, killing Opu instantly. His body was recovered and sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. The bus, however, fled the scene after the accident.
