Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-9) have arrested a man accused in a shocking gang rape incident involving a female tourist in a tea garden in Madhabpur.
The suspect, Shahin Mia (30), was detained during a pre-dawn operation on Saturday (March 28) in Akhaura, based on intelligence inputs. He is a resident of Paramannandapur village under Madhabpur.
According to RAB officials, the incident took place on March 23 around 6:30pm in the Surma tea garden area. The victim had gone there with a friend when they were intercepted by two assailants. The attackers reportedly created panic by shouting “robber,” physically assaulted her companion—forcing him to flee—and then carried out the assault.
After the incident, the perpetrators allegedly snatched the victim’s gold earrings and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident. Local residents later rescued the victim after hearing her cries for help.
The incident sparked widespread reaction on social media. Subsequently, the survivor filed a case with Madhabpur Police Station. Acting on the complaint, RAB launched a shadow investigation and succeeded in arresting Shahin.
RAB’s media official, Additional SP K M Shahidul Islam Sohag, confirmed that the accused has been handed over to the police for further legal proceedings. Authorities are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining suspect involved in the crime.
