India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, has been appointed as the country’s next ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, according to an official announcement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
He is expected to assume his new responsibilities shortly, prompting discussions over his successor in Dhaka.
Indian media outlets have reported that Arif Mohammad Khan is being considered for the position. A seasoned political figure, Khan previously served as the Governor of Kerala from 2019 to 2025 and later as the Governor of Bihar during 2025–2026. He also held key portfolios as a Union minister in the past.
If confirmed, his appointment would mark a notable departure from convention, as the role of High Commissioner is typically held by career diplomats. The selection of a political figure could set a new precedent in recent diplomatic practice.
Pranay Verma assumed office as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh on September 21, 2022. Prior to his posting in Dhaka, he served as India’s ambassador to Vietnam.
However, no official confirmation has yet been issued regarding the appointment of the next High Commissioner to Bangladesh
