A 20-year-old student was stabbed after resisting an attempted robbery aboard a moving train in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area on Saturday afternoon, police said.
The victim, identified as Tofayel Islam, was travelling on the Chattala Express from Kamalapur Railway Station to his home in Brahmanbaria when the incident occurred.
According to Jainal Abedin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhaka Railway Police Station, the attackers assaulted the student with a sharp weapon after he tried to prevent them from snatching his belongings.
Family member Raitul Islam told reporters that Tofayel boarded the train from Kamalapur on Saturday afternoon to return home. As the train was passing through the Tejgaon area, a group of three to four miscreants attempted to snatch his iPhone and cash near the junction between two coaches.
When he resisted, the assailants stabbed him in the waist with a sharp weapon before jumping off the moving train and fleeing the scene. However, they failed to take his mobile phone.
After being informed, relatives rescued him and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the hospital police camp, quoting attending physicians, said the victim sustained a sharp weapon injury to his waist and is currently undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, a team from the railway police has inspected the scene, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved, OC Jainal Abedin said.
