The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday unveiled its new cabinet, comprising 25 full ministers and 24 state ministers, under the leadership of party chairman Tarique Rahman.
The announcement, made at the party’s central office in the capital at noon, immediately triggered discussion within political circles, as several influential and long-serving party figures were notably absent from the list.
According to party sources, the cabinet was formed with an emphasis on maintaining organisational balance, grooming future leadership, and bringing forward a new generation of policymakers. Insiders say the move reflects a broader strategic recalibration aimed at strengthening the party’s long-term political footing.
However, left out of the new cabinet are BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Selima Rahman, Amanullah Aman, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Party insiders told the media that, except for Nazrul Islam Khan and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the other excluded leaders had previously held key ministerial portfolios during past BNP-led governments. Their omission has therefore generated considerable discussion at both grassroots and policy-making levels within the party.
Political analysts suggest that the new cabinet signals a dual strategy: valuing experience while simultaneously creating space for emerging leadership. Many observers view the reshuffle as part of a broader effort to reorganise the party structure and prepare for future political challenges.
Although the party has yet to issue an official explanation regarding the exclusions, a senior BNP leader, speaking to journalists on condition of anonymity, said, “Being outside the cabinet does not diminish anyone’s responsibility. Senior leaders will continue to play vital roles in both party affairs and governance.”
With the cabinet now announced, political observers expect internal deliberations and public debate over the composition to intensify in the coming days.
