A businessman was killed and another person injured after an intercity train slammed into a private car at an unmanned railway crossing in Brahmanbaria’s Bijoynagar upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Mir Saiful Islam Sad, 24, son of late Mohammad Helal of Chanmonipara village under Sarail upazila. The injured, Tamim Ahmed, 27, son of Saidul Haque of Boglahati village in the same upazila, is receiving treatment at a hospital.
The accident took place at the Mukundapur railway crossing near Mukundapur Railway Station when the private car became stuck on the railway track while attempting to cross, according to police and witnesses.
Moments later, the Sylhet-Chattogram-bound Paharika Express crashed into the vehicle, leaving it badly mangled and critically injuring the two occupants.
Locals rushed to the scene and rescued the victims before taking them to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where doctors declared Saiful dead.
Speaking to Red times News, Akhaura Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Quddus said preliminary findings suggest that the vehicle became stranded on the track shortly before the collision.
The train struck the car after it got stuck on the railway line. We have also learned initially that there was no gateman on duty at the crossing at the time of the accident,” he said.
Police have filed an Unnatural Death (UD) Case No. 27/26 dated July 18, 2026 in connection with the incident.
The OC said officers visited the scene and launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
The accident has once again highlighted safety concerns at unmanned railway crossings, prompting local residents to demand stronger safety measures and the appointment of gatemen at high-risk crossings across the region.
