A railway worker was arrested with stolen railway materials in Brahmanbariaâs Akhaura railway station area on Thursday night.
The arrested man was identified as Humayun Kabir, 33, a wayman working under Bangladesh Railwayâs Gang No. 3 in Shayestaganj. He is a resident of Kshirahaati area in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur.
The Railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB) arrested him while he was allegedly carrying old railway materials for sale.
According to RNB sources, a team conducted a raid near the northern side of Platform No. 1 at Akhaura Railway Station around 7:20pm on August 13 following a tip-off.
As the RNB members approached the spot, Humayun allegedly tried to flee. He was later chased and detained with the help of local people on a paved road in front of Ankur Kindergarten.
The RNB recovered 25 ERCs, one hook bolt and four inchans from a plastic bag he was carrying. The seized materials weighed around 19.5kg and were valued at approximately Tk 5,000, according to the case statement.
During preliminary interrogation, Humayun reportedly admitted that he was working as a wayman with Bangladesh Railway.
The case statement said he had allegedly removed old railway materials from the Harshpur railway station area after new materials were installed on the railway line and was taking them away with the intention of selling them.
Mohammad Rezaul Karim, a havildar of the RNBâs Akhaura outpost who led the operation, said Humayun was caught red-handed with railway property.
He was detained with important railway property in his possession. I led the operation with my team. He was later sent to jail through the court after completion of the legal procedures, he said.
Md Abdul Quddus, officer-in-charge of Akhaura Railway Police Station, said a regular case had been filed in connection with the incident.
The case number is 02, dated August 14, 2026. The accused was sent to Brahmanbaria District Jail through the court, he said.
Md Firoz Gulzar, senior sub-assistant engineer (P-way) of Akhaura, confirmed the incident and said Humayun was a railway wayman.
He was previously posted under Akhaura and is currently posted in Shayestaganj. The process of his temporary suspension has been completed following the incident, he said.
RNB Havildar Rezaul Karim filed the case with Akhaura Railway Police Station under Section 4 of the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession Recovery) Act, 2016.
The FIR said Humayun sustained minor injuries while being detained by local people as he attempted to flee. He was later given primary treatment at Akhaura Upazila Health Complex.
Railway officials said old materials used on railway lines also remain the property of Bangladesh Railway. Removing, possessing or carrying such materials for sale without authorisation is a punishable offence.
