Police in Habiganj have arrested Mahdi Hasan, who identified himself as the general secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM), following allegations that he threatened police officials and sparked unrest outside Shayestaganj Police Station.
The arrest comes after Enamul Hasan, also known as Noyon, a local activist with past ties to the banned Chhatra League, was detained late Thursday night over alleged involvement in activities of an outlawed faction. Police said Hasan was taken into custody as a suspect but later released the following morning after no evidence of wrongdoing was found.
According to witnesses and social media footage, Mahdi Hasan went to Shayestaganj Police Station on Friday to demand Noyon’s release. During a heated confrontation with Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam, Hasan reportedly made alarming remarks, including claims of past violent incidents targeting law enforcement. In the viral video, he is heard saying, “We burnt down Baniachang police station and set SI Santosh on fire.”
The incident drew immediate attention as a group of students, led by Mahdi Hasan, staged a sit-in at the OC’s office, demanding Noyon’s release. District leaders of the ADSM stated that although Noyon had previously been associated with Chhatra League politics, he later joined local student activism under the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Additional Superintendent of Police Shahidul Islam intervened around 3:00 pm on Friday, and Noyon was released shortly after. OC Abul Kalam emphasized that the police were not involved in the circulation of the video or any subsequent actions, saying, “What happened after the detention has been seen by the whole country. If anyone commits an offence, they must face legal consequences.”
Mahdi Hasan has received a notice from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement to explain his remarks and has been temporarily suspended from all organizational activities pending further instructions. Police said Hasan is currently under questioning regarding the threats.
The episode highlights ongoing tensions in Habiganj between law enforcement agencies and student activism, as social media coverage amplifies incidents and public scrutiny grows. Observers noted that student-led protests in the district have become increasingly assertive, particularly around issues involving detained activists and local governance.
