Shariatpur’s rural doctor, Khokon Chandra (45), who was brutally attacked with a knife and set on fire, has succumbed to his injuries. He passed away on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dharmudya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Robiul Haque confirmed to that doctors declared Khokon Chandra dead at 7:20 am.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred on the night of December 31 in the Kuerbanga area of Koneshwar Union, Dharmudya Upazila. Khokon Chandra was returning home after closing his pharmacy when he was ambushed by assailants.
The attackers stabbed him in the abdomen, causing severe internal injuries. They then snatched cash and a mobile phone from him before pouring petrol over his body and setting him on fire. In a desperate attempt to survive, he jumped into nearby water, but his face and right hand were badly burned.
Locals rescued him and rushed him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he later died despite intensive treatment.
The victim’s father, Paresh Chandra Das, filed a case at Dharmudya police station against three suspects identified as Sohag Khan (27), Rabbi Molya (21), and Palash Sarder (25).
A relative of the deceased, Pranto Das, told “There was no personal enmity between Khokon Chandra and the accused. We demand swift justice and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.”
Police have intensified operations to apprehend those involved in the attack.
