Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital intern doctors have announced to withdraw their strike and return to work on assurance of meeting their demands.
After a meeting with the hospital authorities on Sunday, January 18, intern doctor Mohammad Sadiq said that they will join work from Monday morning.
On Friday night, intern doctors had an argument with patients and relatives in Surgery Ward No. 4 on the fourth floor of the hospital. At one point, it turned into a clash. At least five people, including a female doctor, were injured in this. On receiving information, the police went to the spot and took control of the situation.
After the strike began, senior officials of the hospital administration including the director of the hospital held a meeting with the agitating intern doctors at around 12 noon on Saturday. After almost an hour-long discussion, the intern doctors announced to continue the strike as there was no agreement.
In view of this, they continued the strike on Sunday as well. Patients admitted to the hospital suffered due to this. Police have detained three people in connection with the attack and vandalism.
Director Brigadier General Umar Rashed Munir held another meeting with the intern doctors on Sunday afternoon. In the hour-long meeting, the director assured the Ansars of ensuring security at the hospital premises.
In addition, the intern doctors presented their demands to the hospital authorities on a total of eight issues.
After the meeting, intern doctor Mohammad Sadiq said, “We started the strike demanding security at the workplace. We are withdrawing the strike as the authorities have assured us of fulfilling our demands. However, keeping in mind the issue of mental preparation, we will join work from 8 am on Monday.”
At this time, Osmani Medical College Director Brigadier General Umar Rashed Munir told reporters, “The interns have withdrawn the strike in accordance with our demands. We will also give their safety the highest priority. In the meantime, it has been decided to deploy Ansars round the clock in various sensitive areas of the hospital.”
The interns’ demand: There should be two trained Ansars (one in the male ward, one in the female ward) in each admission unit of the hospital. In addition, there will be a patrol team every hour during the night shift, who will visit each ward and supervise. And the presence of Ansar members on an emergency basis ‘on call’ should be ensured at night.
A maximum of two relatives (attendants) can stay with the patient. Separate times should be set for relatives to meet patients during winter and summer. In that case, no more than two relatives will be allowed for a patient under any circumstances.
A meeting of interns should be arranged every month with the hospital director.
There should always be mid-level doctors with intern doctors in the hospital.
Especially on the day of admission.
Most assistant registrars are indifferent to teaching intern doctors as required during their apprenticeship. They should be more responsible in this regard.
The police department deployed in the hospital should be made more responsible and effective to maintain a good security environment.
Ansar and outsourcing officers deployed in the hospital should be rotated to different wards on a regular basis.
Independent access of pharmaceutical companies to the hospital should be stopped. If necessary, a fixed meeting time should be arranged for them.
