A three-day programme marking Nazrul Year 2026–2027 concluded in Habiganj on Saturday evening with colourful cultural performances, discussions and prize-giving ceremonies aimed at introducing the life, literature, music and humanist philosophy of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam to the younger generation.
The programme, held from July 2 to 4, was organised by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in association with the Habiganj district administration and the District Shilpakala Academy.
Throughout the three-day event, the academy premises remained vibrant with discussions, Nazrul Sangeet performances, recitations, dance, essay writing, extempore speech and debate competitions, alongside various cultural programmes.
The nationwide inauguration of Nazrul Year 2026–2027 took place on July 2 through a video conference from the Secretariat. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, MP, formally launched the observance and unveiled the official logo and a commemorative postage stamp.
Habiganj Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Dr G M Sarfaraz joined the virtual inauguration from the district administration conference room along with Nazrul researchers, journalists, cultural personalities, artistes and other distinguished guests.
In his remarks, the deputy commissioner called upon people, particularly the younger generation, to embrace Nazrul’s ideals of equality, humanity and secularism through literary and cultural activities.
On the second day, students from educational institutions across the district participated in Nazrul Sangeet, recitation, dance, essay writing, extempore speech and debate competitions. A total of 46 participants won awards in different categories.
Later that evening, a discussion meeting and prize distribution ceremony was held at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium. National Parliament Chief Whip Alhaj Md G K Gaus, MP, attended the programme as the chief guest.
Addressing the audience, he stressed the importance of promoting Nazrul’s ideals, literature, music and secular humanistic values among the younger generation, saying the poet’s philosophy continues to inspire patriotism, equality, justice and humanity.
The programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Dr G M Sarfaraz. Among those who spoke were freedom fighter Golam Mostafa Rafiq, Professor Jahan Ara Khatun, Nazrul Academy President Tahmina Begum Gini, Habiganj district JASAS President Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, while District Cultural Officer Asit Baran Das Gupta delivered the welcome address.
The closing ceremony featured Nazrul Sangeet, recitations and cultural performances, bringing the three-day celebration to an end.
According to the organisers, the festival was intended to familiarise the younger generation with the life, literary works, music and philosophy of Kazi Nazrul Islam while promoting his enduring ideals of equality, humanity and communal harmony.
