A 21-year-old mother, Nipa Ghosh, has died following a caesarean operation at Delta General Hospital in the city’s Bus Stand area, raising serious allegations of medical negligence. Nipa, a resident of Chakbasta village under Singjuri Union in Ghior Upazila, was the wife of Ripon   Kumar Ghosh.
Family members said Nipa was admitted to Delta General Hospital on the morning of Sunday, 11 January, for a caesarean section. The operation was performed by gynaecologist Dr. Sanchita Dastidar, while medical officer Abu Bakr Siddique administered anaesthesia. Shortly after the procedure, her condition deteriorated, and she was rushed to the district hospital. However, she died before reaching the emergency department.
Following the incident, family members alleged that both doctors’ phones were switched off, and no responsible hospital officials were available for comment. Attempts to reach Delta General Hospital Chairman Mohammad Zahir Raihan Azrul reportedly met with evasiveness, further raising questions about accountability and the circumstances of Nipa’s death.
Muhammad Bahauddin, superintendent of Manikganj District Hospital, confirmed: “Nipa Ghosh had passed away before she could be brought to our hospital.”
Civil Surgeon of Manikganj, A.K.M. Mofakhkharul Islam, said: “We have not yet received any written complaint regarding the incident. Once a formal complaint is filed, we will initiate an investigation and take necessary measures, including punitive action against those responsible if required.”
Local residents and family members have voiced renewed concern over oversight in the private healthcare sector, the quality of medical care, and emergency response. Across the country, such incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter monitoring, audits, and accountability in private hospitals to prevent maternal deaths.
Government officials have repeatedly stated that maternal mortality prevention will remain a key priority, with a focus on strengthening national health policies and safe maternity services. However, incidents like this underline persistent challenges in supervision and professional responsibility within private healthcare facilities.
