A massive fire in a residential high-rise in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district continued for a second day, becoming one of the deadliest blazes in the city’s history. Officials confirmed 75 deaths, 76 injuries, and over 300 people still missing.
Rescuers were seen entering smoke-filled apartments overnight as flames remained visible through several windows. Families waited anxiously outside, searching for news of their missing loved ones. Among them was resident Lawrence Lee, who broke down in tears, fearing his wife was trapped inside their flat.
The fire erupted around 2:45 pm on Wednesday in an eight-storey block of a complex that houses 4,500+ residents across 1,984 units. Fire officials believe construction materials inside the building may have triggered the initial ignition.
Deputy Fire Chief Wong Ka-wing said crews were battling extreme heat while searching multiple floors for survivors, adding that completing the rescue operation may take more time.
Authorities say this may become the most catastrophic residential fire Hong Kong has faced in decades.
